World TB Day: The silent killer

Today is World TB Day

Jerome, 22, receives a visit by a community healthworker in his home in Delft township in Cape Town, South Africa. He is coinfected with tuberculosis and HIV. Despite being both treatable and curable, 1.8 million people die from tuberculosis every year- that’s 3 lives every minute. TB also remains the leading killer of people with HIV, causing one in three AIDS-related deaths.

Tom Maguire is a documentary photographer based in London. His work has been published in The Guardian, The Independent, CNN, Al Jazeera, The Globe and Mail, HUCK and GEO Germany. This image is a part of a larger body of work documenting the tuberculosis epidemic, which has brought him to Romania, South Africa, Madagascar, Rwanda and Cambodia.
