Overshoot day, August 2nd, 2017
Never heard of it? I’ll explain to you!
Overshoot day is the day we became in debt with our planet. Let me explain better. Every year, this date can be different. But, what happened last August 2nd was that we exhausted the natural resources of 2018 on our planet. In fact, we’ve been in debt for a long time now, which is why in this moment we would need 1.7 earths to balance what we spend.
The seriousness of these numbers reflects in all spheres of our lives and in the four corners of our planet. The fault is not only in our neighbor, we all are guilty, in every step we take, by car; in all the things we purchase, plastic bags and so on and in every time, we eat a piece of meat.
Nonetheless, it’s still possible to stabilize the balance until 2050, if by then we delay the overshoot day between 4 to 5 days. But, for that to happen we must change a lot. We must:
- Consume less and in a sustainable way.
- Reduce consumption of animal products.
- Reuse and repair personal and electronic objects.
- Walk, cycle or take public transports.
- Actively participate in the community in creating better sustainable infrastructure and policies.
At the official overshoot day website it is possible for you to calculate your footprint and figure out when was your overshoot day. August 2nd marks the world’s day, but according to our lifestyle this date can change to a day before or after day 2. I suggest that you take the test, so that you can understand the impact you have in our planet. The first step for a change is to be aware of this number and the meaning of it.
